7.0% of Guatemala’s urban population receives a college education.
A scholarship fund initiated in 2006 by Dr. Jane Sullivan and Dr. Midge Madden has allowed Escuela Integrada to offer continuing education scholarships to Escuela Integrada personnel. Teachers who choose to follow advanced teaching careers are given priority in the amount that they are scholar-shipped as are employees that desire to improve their ability to do their job. But, any request in which a person is seeking to attain better preparation is looked on favorably. Seven (7) scholarships were awarded in 2006 for a total of $1000 and twelve (12) scholarships are expected to be given in 2007. It is interesting to note that Escuela Integrada has twenty-nine (29) employees, almost half of which are taking advantage of the opportunity to attain more education. Scholarship amounts are determined by the total amount of money given, a desire to support each teacher at least in part and the chosen career. Each recipient is required to sign a scholarship contract and remain working in Escuela Integrada for one (1) additional year after which their studies have ended. Average Employee Scholarship $150.00 It is important to remember that in Guatemala a high school graduate is certified to teach grade school. Teacher Training
